A Thousand Thank Yous
🔀 Shuffle Sundays #84 • Mulamba, The 1975, Jessie Ware, Jenna Barton, and more!
🎊 Before we jump into today’s recommendations, I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to each and every one of you, as this beloved newsletter recently crossed the sweet milestone of 1,000 subscribers! When I started this project, back in January of 2021, one thousand subscribers was always a dream that, although I knew it was possible to reach, at times during the journey I doubted myself that it was even going to happen. So paraphrasing my fellow writer and friend Matt Tillotson in his great newsletter Matt’s Mixtape:
“Whatever you’re working on or working through: keep showing up”!
💽 » Será Só Aos Ares, by Mulamba
brazilian popular music • 12 songs • 42 minutes
Out of the many interesting new names of the contemporary Brazilian Popular Music scene, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.
Based in São Paulo, Brazil, Mulamba is an all-woman band that sounds both old-school and modern at the same time, thanks to the individual talents coming together as a true powerhouse in the studio and live, as they have been proving themselves in the last few years playing at different venues and music festivals throughout the country. By the end of the first spin on their new album, Será Só Aos Ares, you’ll have tasted a rich variety of genres and instruments that will have you ready to start all over again.

🎶 » Happiness, by The 1975
After a somewhat intriguing first single, The 1975 gave us another taste of their upcoming album in the shape of their new single Happiness, which this time sounds a lot like some of their popular old songs and got everybody really curious to hear what else they have in the bag for us. Being Funny In a Foreign Language will be out on October 14, and I can’t wait to see if it will bring the band back to stardom or put them even deeper into the pretentious and weird space of their last effort.
🎶 » Free Yourself, by Jessie Ware
Back with another disco banger is Jessie Ware, with her new single Free Yourself, which follows her amazing 2020 album What’s Your Pleasure? If you, like the rest of the world, can’t put Beyoncé’s new album down, Free Yourself is exactly what you need: more delicious disco music with empowering lyrics that will have you dancing like there’s no tomorrow, even if only in your mind. I really hope this is just a tease for an upcoming album!
