Shuffle Sundays #33 • Jonathan Ferr, Don Brocco, Deafheaven, Big Thief, Phoebe Bridges, Arnaud Montagard, & more!
Hello and welcome to Shuffle Sundays, a weekly newsletter with music recommendations to help you find your next obsession.
This week we’re listening to Brazilian jazz, watching music videos of new singles from contemporary rock bands inspired by 90s shoegaze, feeling inspired by some photography work inspired by a classic painter, checking out some new music released this past week, and more. Enjoy the read!

💽 »Jonathan Ferr - Cura
Jonathan Ferr is a Brazilian pianist based in Rio de Janeiro whose music aims to resignify instrumental music and jazz for a new generation, while still being able to please a more traditional audience. While his first album (Trilogia do Amor, 2019) featured guest vocalists and had a full band accompanying him throughout most of the record, Cura (2021) explores a more minimalist environment with delicate arrangements beautifully performed by Ferr. Except for two tracks — Esperança, and Caminho, which feature vocals in the shape of spoken word — most of the album is sustained by Jonathan’s piano and occasional string arrangements. It’s a perfect mix of classical music with jazz experimentations in a modern and exciting package.

📺 » Don Broco - One True Prince
Really enjoying the Deftones vibes from this new Don Brocco single, my favorite so far, from their upcoming album Amazing Things, to be released on September 17th.

📺 » Deafheaven - In Blur
Another one that blew me away was Deafheaven’s new single In Blur, from their upcoming album Infinite Granite, out next Friday. Known as an experimental rock band often going to the extreme, this new track shows a big change in pace and brings lots of 90's shoegaze layers to the track.

🔀 » Shuffle News:
• the super prolific NYC-based indie-rock band Big Thief is back with two new songs — Little Things / Sparrow — shortly after releasing two great records in the same year, following by also great solo albums from some of its members;
• the also prolific Phoebe Bridges, who released one of the best albums of 2020, is joining a long list of guests for Metallica’s Black Album 30 years celebration (out on Sept 10), covering the classic Nothing Else Matters.
⚡️ » Something to Inspire
Arnaud Montagard is a Brooklyn-based Photographer whose work is often compared to painter Edward Hopper, which it’s not difficult to understand why. Check out his website or Instagram for more. Here are some favorites:
