Greetings from New York City!

🥁 I’m completely devastated with the news of the sudden passing of legendary drummer Taylor Hawkins last Friday. I regret not having ever seen the Foo Fighters live, but having recently finished Dave Grohl’s memoir, this news hit even harder.

💽 » The Postal Service - Everything Will Change

indie-pop, alternative-rock • 16 songs • 73 minutes

A few issues ago I talked a little bit about my passion for live music and live albums, so here am I recommending another one! But different than that one, where my excitement was towards the loud and passionate audience, today’s album has a different appeal to me.

Formed in the early 2000s by singer Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) and producer Jimmy Tamborello, The Postal Service is a supergroup/side-project that, unfortunately, only exists in the shape of their one and only studio album Give Up, released in 2003. Despite positive reception from both fans and critics, the duo was pretty much inactive until 2013, when they decided to reissue the album and go on a 10 years anniversary tour, which resulted in the live album Everything Will Change.

What I love most about this album is how well it captures all the different sounds and many layers that the band first introduced in the studio, making the live performance very faithful to the original material, something that it’s not always easy to do. Just think about how many bands sound significantly different when you hear them live. Everything Will Change is a celebration of a well-acclaimed project (and album) that may never receive a proper follow-up, and that’s ok with me.

📺 » Arcade Fire - The Lightning I, II

5 years after their weakest album to this date, Canadian indie-rockers Arcade Fire are back with a great and exciting new pair of singles! The Lightning (I and II) were released separately on the streaming platforms but were combined into one single 6+ minutes music video. It’s a great redemption of their old style, but without necessarily repeating themselves. More like a combination of genres that made them so popular over the past couple of decades. With the release of the single/video, they also announced that their new album, called WE, will be out on May 6th.

📺 » Caroline Polacheck - Billions

I’ve been in love with Caroline Polacheck’s music since 2019’s Pang, her third studio album, but the first under her given name. Polacheck delivers incredibly produced pop music full of experimentations, but just enough not to make casual listeners alienated. And besides the amazing instrumentals, her lyrics are equally exceptional, which makes the full package an even more fulfilling experience. Billions is the second single of what seems to be her next project, still to be announced.

Great list, Leo! I haven't heard The Postal Service in years. It takes me back to a very narrow window of time/set of memories when we were expecting our first son.
