Friend of a Friend
🔀 SS #112 • Phoebe Bridgers, Slowly Slowly, The Smile, Juan Carlos García and more!
💽 » Punisher, by Phoebe Bridgers
folk, indie, singer-songwriter • 11 songs • 40 minutes
I recently revisited Phoebe Bridgers’ second album Punisher (2020), which I had already briefly recommended a couple of years ago, and it’s incredible how much this album keeps growing on me each time I listen to it again. It’s a powerful journey alternating between folk and indie-rock moments with such rawness that you don’t see it (or hear it in this case) very often, making this easily one of the best singer-songwriter albums from recent years. If you’ve never heard of her or didn’t catch your attention before, do yourself a favor and embark on the journey, you’ll thank me later.
🎶 » God, by Slowly Slowly
I first came across Slowly Slowly when YouTube suggested to me their rendition of blink-182’s I Miss You, and it was so surprisingly good (and different), that it was impossible for me not to be curious to listen to their own music, and I’m so glad I did. ‘God’ was my first introduction to their original material and I was completely sold. It’s pop-punk-emo perfection and has one of the best storytelling I’ve heard in a long time. If that sounds good to you, make sure to listen to the whole album Daisy Chain (2022), which ended up getting stuck on repeat around here for a long time.
🎶 » Friend of a Friend, by The Smile
From their recently released (and incredible) second album Wall of Eyes (2023), ‘Friend of a Friend’ debuted as one of my favorite tracks from the band so far, blending their characteristic art-rock-jazz sound with a perfect dose of Beatles-esque atmosphere. The Smile is a trio formed in 2020 by Radiohead’s members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, joined by drummer Tom Skinner, which you may know from jazz projects like Sons of Kemet
