Random Bits #1
🔀 SS #106 • Christopher Nolan, Temi Coker, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Radiohead, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more!
On my continuous experimentation in this newsletter, I decided to turn “random bits”, which used to be one of the sections of the usual Sunday format, into its own issue, expanding on the number of contents I used to recommend and creating a more broad and inspiring list. And to make this a bit more interactive, why don’t you use the comments section below and drop a piece of content you’ve enjoyed recently and think more people should try it?
🎬 • although I had mixed feelings about his last movie, Christopher Nolan continues to be one of my favorite contemporary directors, and his new project Oppenheimer looks very promising;
🎨 • I love how Temi Coker blends design and photography into powerful portraits. This video is an inspiring look into his creative process;
🤯 • I recently finally watched Everything Everywhere All At Once and it automatically became one of my favorite films of all time. If you’re curious about it, here’s how a 5-person team made blockbuster-level movie effects;
🎶 • musician Mary Spender’s video essay about the dark future of music;
📸 • Winter Blues, Night & Day, One World Framed;
📝 • great piece by Ted Gioia on What Can We Learn from Barnes & Noble's Surprising Turnaround;
⚡️ • here’s what happens when you combine Radiohead’s masterpiece album In Rainbows with Super Mario 64 sound effects;
🌊 • I’d love to be teleported to one of Jared Pike’s worlds;
🎶 • for U2’s upcoming re-imagined album Songs of Surrender, Portuguese director and animator João Pombeiro created this incredible piece serving as an album trailer;
🎙️ • Anitta & Rosalía on the borders of Latin pop [via LadySpoiler];
🕹️ • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is a deliciously nostalgic trip through the great beat ‘em up arcade era.

🎶 » New Music
this week’s new albums I'm curious to check out
Also, new singles from Halsey, The National, Chvrches, The Band Camino, and many more. If you’re curious to hear some of these songs and more, make sure to follow my 2023 playlist on Spotify, updated weekly with new releases:
Not gonna lie, that video from Mary Spender has me feeling really pessimistic about the future of music. I just can't seem to wrap my head around all of it. Even though she's optimistic, I can't help but feel sort of defeated by where it's all headed. And I don't think I'm alone. Thanks for sharing that though — I never would have found that otherwise.
I just watched the first season of Severence (on Apple TV+) for the second time, and I don't care what anyone says: it is the best TV show of 2022 and one of the best of all time. Must. Watch.
