Slow Dancing in The Dark
🔀 Shuffle Sundays #93 • Black Midi, Fever Ray, Joji, Katja Liebmann, and more!
💽 » Hellfire, by Black Midi
experimental rock, jazz fusion, math-rock • 10 songs • 39 minutes
If I’m not mistaken, this might be the first time I’m repeating an artist in the “album recommendation” section of this newsletter, which sooner or later was going to end up happening.
Just over a year after releasing their sophomore album Cavalcade, the English rock band Black Midi returned with an even better record that is able to continue to stay close to their strengths while pushing their boundaries even further. Hellfire is an incredibly chaotic and fun album to listen to, especially once you’re able to pass through some of the discomforting sounds and embrace the uniqueness of their style. At times it sounds like a true masterclass, particularly if you’re able to experience their live concert, as I did last summer in NYC.
🎶 » What They Call Us, by Fever Ray
5 years after his last album, Swedish singer-songwriter and producer Fever Ray (formerly one-half of the electronic music duo The Knife) is back with an incredible new single What They Call Us, which also got a haunting music video perfect for the Halloween season. Although What They Call Us was released as Fever Ray, the track was co-produced by his former bandmate. No new album was announced yet, but I really hope there’s one on the way!
🎶 » Slow Dancing in The Dark, by Joji
From his sophomore album (and my favorite of 2018) Ballads 1, Slow Dancing in The Dark was the song that introduced me to singer-songwriter and producer Joji (aka George Kusunoki Miller) and left me completely obsessed with his music and art. Crazy to think that George was also a very successful comedian, rapper, and YouTuber before adopting the moniker Joji and starting yet another extremely successful career.
