💽 » A Light for Attracting Attention, by The Smile
alternative rock, jazz, experimental • 13 songs • 53 minutes
During the few weeks I was away, I decided to listen to and/or revisit some albums from 2022 that for different reasons didn't make my end-of-the-year list, but I didn’t want to let them go unnoticed around here at the same time. So why not start the new year recommending an album that, had I given the proper attention, would have probably ranked pretty high amongst my last year’s favorites?
The Smile is a trio formed in 2020 by Radiohead’s members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, joined by drummer Tom Skinner, which you may know from jazz projects like Sons of Kemet. In their first full-length album A Light for Attracting Attention, recorded during the lockdown and released in 2022, the trio explores the many different sounds that you would expect when you think about each individual and their respective former projects. At times it feels like a melting pot of all the different Radiohead albums, that is until Skinner adds his drums full of personality, especially on tracks like Thin Thing, The Smoke, and The Opposite.
While the future of Radiohead remains uncertain, The Smile is a very welcomed side project that is able to somehow deliver even more than its promise.
🎶 » Meant To Be, by City and Colour
City and Colour is the solo project of singer-songwriter Dallas Green, also known as the melodic counterpart in the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. And while his original band never really grabbed my attention that much, City and Colour got a place in my heart right away.
If you listen to his discography in chronological order, you will notice a slight change of style over the years, starting in a more folk/acoustic setting, and culminating in a full-band sound. But what always remained the same since the very beginning is the amount of emotion Green is able to put into every single composition, through his beautiful lyrics, powerful voice, and especially the dreamy melodies.
Meant To Be is the first official single from his upcoming 7th studio album The Love Still Held Me Near, out March 31st.
🎶 » Eleanor, by Hot Chip
In their 8th studio album Freakout/Release (2022), English band Hot Chip continues to do what they do best: delicious indie-electronic-synth-pop perfect for any situation.
From the album comes the single Eleanor, which got an awesome music video made in stop motion, featuring the band’s own members as the directors of the video, in which the main character realizes she’s inside the set and it’s all made of clay. A super fun idea that goes hand in hand with the music.
