🎬 • Soul, by Pete Docter and Kemp Powers
{something to watch • film, 100 min}
Pixar's most recent animated film is another masterpiece that instantly became my favorite movie of 2020 and one of my favorite from the studio of all time. A journey into finding our purpose in life, something that we all think about it at some point, but that artists and creative people will easily identify since the main character here is a jazz musician. Beautifully animated, trippy at times, with an equally incredible soundtrack, alternating jazz music from Jon Batiste, with electronic ambiance composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. {available on Disney+}
📚 • Tiny Habits, by BJ Fogg
{something to read • book, 320 pages}
If one of your New Year's resolutions is related to forming new and better daily habits or getting rid of bad ones, Tiny Habits may be the book you need to finally do so. It was one of the big influences and much-needed help for me to stick with my own habits last year. {available on Amazon}.
🎙 • Yukika - Soul Lady
{something to listen to • album, 37 min}
There's no question that K-Pop is currently one of the most popular music genres on the planet, but most people still have a hard time giving it a chance to the numerous boy or girl bands out there, like the ultra-famous BTS or Black Pink. If you are looking for an "easier" way in, stop everything you are doing and listen to Soul Lady, the debut album from Japanese-born, Korea-based singer Yukika. My currently favorite song is the title-track Soul Lady, a fun and perfectly executed song that could have easily be made in the late 70s, early 80s. If you are able to pass through the language barrier, I'm sure you won't regret it. {available on Spotify}.
📺• Song Exploder, volume 2
{something to watch • tv series}
Last year I wrote about my love for behind the scenes content and how much I've enjoyed Song Exploder, the Netflix documentary series based on the ultra-popular podcast by the same name. The second volume is out and brings 4 more episodes with artists including Dua Lipa, The Killers, Nine Inch Nails, and Natalia Lafourcade. {available on Netflix}.
📚 • Snapdragon, by Kat Leyh
{something to read • graphic novel, 240 pages}
I wish more people would ignore the fact that graphic novels (and comic books) are often geared towards younger audiences and allow themselves to discover and dive into an incredible universe of stories and illustrations out there. Snapdragon is one of those cases where you instantly get attached to the characters and don't want to put it away. The illustrations and book design are equally great. You are in for a treat. {available on Amazon}.
🎨 • The Queen's Gambit | end credits
{something to inspire • video, 1:47 min}
By now you may be tired of hearing about Netflix's smash hit The Queen's Gambit, but (if you watched) did you pay attention to the beautifully crafted end credits that roll out at the end of the very last episode? You can also read this interview with Saskia Marka, the designer behind the project. {via Art of the Title}
💽 • Some new music released this past week
{new music releases}
It's been only 3 days into 2021 and not much was released so far. A few things to check are the remix version of Grimes' 2019 well-received Miss Anthropocene, the new album from Brazilian duo ANAVITÓRIA called COR, and Foo Fighters' new single No Son Of Mine.
