Foolish Thinking
🔀 SS #103 • Kimbra, Everything But The Girl, Dayseeker, Ella Morton, and more!
💽 » A Reckoning, by Kimbra
alternative pop • 10 songs • 40 minutes
In my last issue of 2022, I recommended Kimbra’s single Replay!, from her then-upcoming album A Reckoning, which finally came out last week and it was exactly what I was hoping for.
On her 4th studio album, the New Zealander singer brings back her signature alternative pop sound while continuing to push her own boundaries even further, by herself and also through great collaborations throughout the record, as seen in Foolish Thinking, one of my favorite tracks, featuring Son Lux’s founder Ryan Lott.
A Reckoning is a pop album that is not afraid of defying the genre's preconceptions, creating a powerful journey both sonic and lyrically.
🎶 » Nothing Left To Lose, by Everything But The Girl
English electronic-pop duo Everything But The Girl is back after 24 years from their last studio album Temperamental (1999). Upon the announcement of the new album Fuse, out April 21st, the duo released the first single Nothing Left To Lose and it sounds exactly where they left off 24 years ago, with their characteristic sounds and vocals, but in a somewhat updated and modernized way.
The single instantly became one of my favorite songs of the year so far, and I just can’t wait to hear what the rest of the album will sound like!
🎶 » Neon Grave, by Dayseeker
Dayseeker is an American rock band whose sound is difficult to put on one single label. Some will call it post-hardcore, others metalcore, but you can find many other elements in their music.
From their 5th studio album Dark Sun (2022) comes Neon Grave, my introduction to the band and a perfect introduction to the album and their style. A heavy but very melodic rock anthem with doses of orchestration and great vocals.
⚡️ Visual Inspiration
Ella Morton is a Canadian photo-based artist and filmmaker who uses experimental photographic processes to capture the sublime and fragile qualities of remote landscapes. The photographs are treated in the darkroom with mordançage, a black-and-white process that degrades the shadow areas of gelatin silver prints, lifting the emulsion off the paper to create unique textures.
