As the year is coming to an end, be on the lookout for the last issue of 2022 next week with some notes on the state of this newsletter, and the list with my favorite albums of the year.
💽 » Game, by Odeon
rock, metalcore • 14 songs • 40 minutes
When I wrote about Electric Callboy’s album Tekkno a couple of months ago, I mentioned it as being one of the most fun albums I’ve listened to in a long time. Well, in terms of a fun album, the Brazilian band Odeon also delivered a great one.
Essentially a rock band, they have no fear of experimenting with many other genres, including R&B, pop, and even Brazilian Funk, with lyrics in both English and Portuguese. When I mentioned them for the first time a year ago, they were somewhat recently formed, and I’m so excited with how good the whole album sounds after so much anticipation.
🎶 » Whatup, by DOMi & JD BECK
Another exciting recent discovery of mine was the super young duo of prodigy jazz musicians DOMi & JD BECK. Even though they started playing together in 2018 and have since collaborated with many incredible artists, it was in 2022 that things blew up, upon the release of their first singles, followed by their debut album Not Tight last July. Good luck watching this live performance above and not being impressed by how crazy talented they are at playing their instruments and making it look like it’s the easiest thing to do!
🎶 » Replay!, by Kimbra
You most likely know Kimbra through her collaboration with singer-songwriter Gotye on his massive smash-hit Somebody That I Used To Know, which came out 11 years ago. If that was your introduction to her music, I hope that you continued to follow her own solo career, otherwise, I hope you’ll pay her a visit and catch up with her discography after this recommendation. Replay! is one of the two singles from her upcoming fourth album A Reckoning (2023), and brings her signature and always interesting experimental pop sound.

DOMi & JD BECK reminds me of a niche Japanese instrumental band called "Mouse on the Keys". Definitely worth a listen, Leo!
Was impressed by DOMi and Beck, Leo! I'd be curious to see (and hear) how they'd play in a more traditional song-structure (or, at least in a song at, say, 3+ minutes long). I'll also be adding them to my shopping list....I must stop by IKEA and buy the poor dears some furniture! Their rehearsal space just appears so stark and empty! And, maybe an inexpensive painting or two?🎅
