π Shuffle Sundays #73 β’ Bon Iver, Polyphia, Panic! at The Disco, David Bowie, Nathaniel Drew, Beavis and Butt-Head, Sojung Kim-McCarthy, and more!
I had the same experience seeing Bon Iver live at Radio City a few years before 22, A Million came out. He was definitely starting to explore some really interesting electronic arrangements and pairing them with incredible light displays. I didn't really get 22, A Million at first, but it has since become one of my favorite records of his. i,i is great, too. So glad you got to go see him!
I fell in love with Bon Iver over their first two albums, and especially with that sophomore album you mentioned. I haven't given enough of a listen to the last two albums, but when I found out that Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak and Flock of Dimes had joined the band after i,i that has inspired me to give these last albums a deeper listen. Glad it was such a good show!
It was truly an amazing experience, just wish the circumstances (venue, audience) were different. Definitely give those newer records another try. Also, there's a lot of recent concerts on YouTube, from fan-made to professionally recorded, and I feel that the newer material really grows live!
I'll look up a few. Recently(ish) saw one from Radio City Music Hall that was really good. I feel like that sophomore release was a masterpiece and is pretty hard to top!
Yeah that Radio City concert is pretty good! And I agree with you regarding the sophomore album... at this point I'm just learning to listen to the albums as 2 different phases, instead of trying to compare the old with the new stuff.
Polyphia fascinates me. Along with bands like Unprocessed, it took me a minute to adjust their fusion of electronic, synth and pop arrangements with prog/djent (because I used to be a djent/prog metal "purist"). But over time, they have really grown on me and I appreciate their craftsmanship.
Oh they're great. You can check out songs like "Dead Rose" and "Abandoned". Dead Rose is very much electronica/synthpop meets prog; while Abandoned is much closer to heavier prog metal djent stuff. They also have a song with Tim for Polyphia called "Real".
The common denominator in all these songs is the stellar guitar work. It's pretty beautiful stuff.
Iβve also got a love/hate relationship with big live gigsβ¦ theyβd be great if not for all the people π
I feel like the older I get, the less patience I have for big events and crowds in general... π
Same here, I think Iβm actually becoming Larry David
Same x 1,000,000

Also, thank you for the shoutout!
So cool to hear that! And I envy you for seeing them at Radio City... Iβm sure it was a significantly different experience than mine, in a good way!

Great newsletter as always!
Thank you, Billy! Never heard of Unprocessed before, but I canβt wait to check it out based on your comment!

forget what I said, just realized I have Deadrose on my metalcore playlist, I guess I never paid attention to the bandβs name π¬
Polyphia is amazing! Thanks for putting it on my radar now!!!
Isnβt them amazing? I canβt stop listening since I discovered!
Likewise, absolutely amazing! Admittedly I am also hooked on Lady Wray!
She's amazing!! One of my favorite albums of this year!
