Shuffle Sundays #47 • KennyHoopla, Tiago Iorc, BADBADNOTGOOD, Eddie Vedder, Big Thief, Kacey Musgraves, Jan Erik Waider & more!
Hello and welcome to Shuffle Sundays, a weekly newsletter with music recommendations to help you find your next obsession.
This week we’re listening to an interesting name on the new pop/dance-punk scene, watching a confessional new video from a Brazilian singer-songwriter, a Canadian band blending jazz with hip-hop, feeling inspired by abstract landscape photography, checking out some new music released this past week, and more. Enjoy the read!

💽 » KennyHoopla - Survivors Guilt: The Mixtape
pop-punk, alternative rock • 8 songs • 21 minutes
The first time I came across KennyHoopla was through his single How Will I Rest in Peace if I'm Buried by a Highway?, a delicious dance-punk tune with lots of Bloc Party vibes, which is part of an EP of the same title released last year. Fast forward to June of 2021, and Kenny was back with his first mixtape Survivors Guilt, featuring the omnipresent Travis Barker on drums and 8 new tracks that followed his successful EP. While his mixtape borrows much more from pop-punk than from the dance-punk / indie-rock that got me excited in the first place, it still makes KennyHoopla one of the most interesting names in this whole pop-punk revival that has been going on lately.

📺 » Tiago Iorc - Masculinidade
Brazilian singer-songwriter Tiago Iorc has had a pretty interesting and unusual musical career up until this day, to say the least. After achieving massive national success in 2015, he decided to stay away from the spotlight and social media, completely disappearing until his surprise return in 2019 with a full-length album followed by an MTV Unplugged performance and another year-long disappearance. This time, Tiago is back with a completely new look and a brand new single that sounds very different than the music that got him popular 7 years ago. Masculinidade (Masculinity) is a 6-minute song that mixes his vocals with spoken word and a little bit of rap-like verses, on top of a more minimal arrangement. But what really shines in the song is the lyrical content, where Tiago opens up about his own fragilities, mental health struggles, and the reasons for his disappearance.
🗣 » Since I know that most of my readers don’t understand Portuguese, I highly recommend you activate the closed captions feature, then go on the settings and choose “auto-translate” to your native language. It does a much better job than I was anticipating.

📺 » BADBADNOTGOOD - City of Mirrors
A skateboarding session throughout the streets of Toronto, with an incredible soundtrack by one of the best names in contemporary Jazz these days, the Canadians known by BADBADNOTGOOD. City of Mirrors, one of the many tracks featuring Brazilian legend Arthur Verocai, is part of their 6th studio album, Talk Memory, released just last month.

• Pearl Jam’s frontman Eddie Vedder has a new album on the way, called Earthling, scheduled to be released in February of 2022. The first two singles Long Way, and The Haves are out, and I’m really enjoying the visual identity of this new project. Earthling will be Vedder’s 4th solo album, with two of them being film soundtracks1.
• After a few great singles released throughout 2021, the incredible and prolific band Big Thief also announced their new album for February of 2022. Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You will be a 20 tracks album following their two successful 2019 albums U.F.O.F. and Two Hands, the latter which brought us the incredible single Not, my favorite song of the band and one of my favorites from that year.
• Country superstar Kacey Musgraves released a delicate cover for Coldplay’s mega-hit Fix You. 3 years ago she had done an even more delicate version for Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know.
