Meet Me at The Altar 🤘🏼
Shuffle Sundays 34 • Meet Me @ The Altar, Thrice, Lizzo, Bon Iver, Silk Sonic, Andrew Paul, Jenny Kern, Luis Mendo, & more!
Hello and welcome to Shuffle Sundays, a weekly newsletter with music recommendations to help you find your next obsession.
This week we’re listening to a new(ish) pop-punk band that has been my current obsession, watching new music videos from new and veteran artists, feeling inspired by great illustrations from a Tokyo-based artist, checking out some new music released this past week, and more. Enjoy the read!

💽 » Meet Me @ The Altar - Model Citizen
Forget about MKG, Mod Sun, or Olivia Rodrigo. The real pop-punk revival has a name, and it’s called Meet Me @ The Altar! Not that the genre has been completely dead, but it certainly doesn’t have the same energy or appeal compared to the early 2000s. But different than the predominant white/male bands that flooded the scene back then, Meet Me @ The Altar consists of three incredible young women that are bringing not only a fresh perspective but also contributing to a lot of important discussions in the music industry. Though their music is easily categorized as pop-punk, it also sounds so much more than that, especially in the drumming department, where Ada Juarez delivers a mind-blowing and hypnotic performance that sometimes brings the sonority closer to metalcore bands. Model Citizen is only their first release through a major label, and if it serves as any indication, they surely have a huge and bright future ahead of them, and I am so happy to be witnessing it.

📺 » Thrice - Robot Soft Exorcism
I’ve been a Thrice fan for a long time now, and it’s pretty incredible how they continue to keep the quality of their music at a pretty high level, 20+ years into their career. Robot Soft Exorcism is the second single from their upcoming album Horizons / East, to be released on September 17th. Can’t wait!

📺 » Lizzo - Rumors (feat. Cardi B)
Lizzo took me (and the world) by surprise with her 2019 smash-hit Juice, followed by the great album Cuz I Love You in the same year. Two years later she’s back with Rumors, the first single of what seems to be an upcoming new album. Although I’m still not a Cardi B fan, I really enjoyed this collaboration. Another great track from one of the most interesting names in pop music these days.

🔀 » Shuffle News:
• Bon Iver announced the release of a 10th-anniversary reissue of their masterpiece self-titled album, which I recommended here on issue #27, on CD and LP on January 14, 2022. The reissue will contain 5 bonus tracks, and the physical release will feature an essay written by Phoebe Bridgers. Shut up and take my money!
• An Evening With Silk Sonic, the highly anticipated debut album from Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak, originally scheduled for 2021, was pushed to January 2022. With two great singles so far, Leave The Door Open and Skate, my expectations couldn’t be higher for a full release.
• Andrew Paul, the mind behind the incredible band Jesus On The Mainline (one of my favorite albums of 2017), is back with a great debut solo single called Get Up. Listen here.
• Jenny Kern, who I recommended here before and had the enormous pleasure of working with a few times, just put out yet another amazing new single called Where Did The Time Go. Listen here or watch the music video below:
