singer-songwriter • 14 songs • 45 minutes
When I listen to an album for the first time, I rarely pay attention to the lyrics right away. I tend to be much more drawn to the melodies than anything else, and I hear that a lot of people are like that too. But once in a blue moon things just hit differently.
Five Seconds Flat is the sophomore album from singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine and a strong candidate to be one of my favorites of 2022. The last time I felt so impacted by the lyrical content of an album was probably with Spanish Love Songs’ 2020 Brave Faces Everyone, and I’m not trying to say that these two records have better lyrics than everything else I’ve listened to these last couple of years… But the raw emotion and powerful storytelling captured my attention in a way that it was impossible not to stop everything else and immerse myself into those universes.
From the powerful opening Doomsday to the more casual closing Orange Show Speedway, Five Seconds Flat is a sincere and compelling piece of work that you don’t see (or hear in this case) very often, but when it happens ignites my love for music all over again.
🎶 » Sirens, by Flume feat Caroline Polacheck
A few issues ago I shared one of Caroline Polacheck’s new singles, Billions, and my excitement for her work and a possible upcoming album, and here she is again, this time as a featured guest in the Australian producer Flume’s song Sirens, from his highly anticipated upcoming record Palaces, out on May 20th. Her voice and style fit so perfectly on top of his electronic production, that I’d love to see a whole album from them. Who knows one day!?
🎶 » When We Were Young, by Architects
Shortly one year after the release of the great For Those That Wish to Exist1, British metalcore band Architects is back with the powerful new single When We Were Young, which came out of nowhere accompanied by a simple but pretty effective music video that sees the band performing the song in one take while the camera rotates around the members, making the song the true center of attention.
